World Bee Day

The Hon. AILEEN MacDONALD (10:04:20):

I move:

(1)That this House acknowledges that on 20 May 2023 Australians celebrated World Bee Day.

(2)That this House notes that:

(a)the main purpose of World Bee Day events is to spread awareness of the significance of bees and other pollinators for human life;

(b)bees are an essential component of food security;

(c)native bee species help to protect flora biodiversity; and

(d)bees play a vital role in preserving the health of our ecosystem.

(3)That this House notes that:

(a)the Buzz About Bees event occurred 20 May as part of a series of workshops run by Honey Bee Hives in cooperation with The Mend & Make Do Crew from South Grafton;

(b)subsequent free workshops are being run over the course of this week to celebrate World Bee Day; and

(c)these events:

(i)educate attendees on the importance of bees and their contributions to our world;

(ii)support the beekeepers through the sale of all natural honey and honeycomb products;

(iii)raise money for The Mend & Make Do Crew through the donation of 10 per cent of sales at the events going to this cause; and

(iv)foster community engagement and cohesion.

(4)That this House recognises the important work of apiarists in New South Wales and Australia.
