The Hon. AILEEN MacDONALD (10:05): I move:

(1)That this House notes that:

(a)Streetwork is an organisation which offers dedicated mentoring support to 11- to 18-year-olds identified as at risk or vulnerable;

(b)the work Streetwork undertakes is crucial to the development of some young people in our community;

(c)on Friday 31 January 2025 Streetwork published a new report by Dr Shanthi "Sha" Robertson from the Insight Centre entitled Prevention is the cure: Early intervention is the key to combatting our youth crisis;

(d)the report was launched by the Hon. Rose Jackson, MLC, Minister for Water, Minister for Housing, Minister for Homelessness, Minister for Mental Health, Minister for Youth, and Minister for the North Coast; and

(e)the report has three key findings:

(i)youth detention based services in New South Wales now cost over $200 million annually, with the cost of keeping a child in custody nearing $2,800 per day, or $1.1 million per year, more than double the cost from a decade ago;

(ii)New South Wales has seen a 55 per cent increase in spending on mental health services over the past decade;

(iii)supporting a homeless young person costs $20,300 a year, with a total annual cost of youth homelessness of over $200 million in New South Wales.

(2)That this House thanks Chief Executive Officer Helen Banu, OAM, and her team for commissioning the report, which will assist many in the youth sector and organisations that deliver early intervention and prevention programs to vulnerable people.
