Northern Rivers Flooding Commemoration

The Hon. AILEEN MacDONALD (10:03:57):

I move:

(1)That this House notes that:

(a)on 28 February 2023, the Lismore community gathered to reflect and connect one year on from the Northern Rivers flood event that occurred on 28 February 2022;

(b)at the gathering, the community recognised the "Boaties" who took to the water during the event and saved countless lives; and

(c)they then participated in a non-denominational service, to allow for reflection and healing for all residents across the Northern Rivers.

(2)That this House reflects upon the extent of the damage caused by the February 2022 flood, particularly:

(a)the four people who lost their lives; and

(b)the more than 3000 homes and business affected.

(3)That this House recognises the impact still being felt by all who endured the event and the fact that its effects will be long lasting.

(4)That this House acknowledges the important work of the Northern Rivers Reconstruction Corporation in the seven local government areas affected, namely: Ballina, Byron, Clarence Valley, Kyogle, Lismore, Richmond Valley and Tweed.

(5)That this House pays its respects to the lives lost, gives thanks those service men and women and countless volunteers who assisted the region in its time of need, and commends the community for its resilience in the face of natural disasters.

Motion agreed to.
