International Day of the Girl Child

The Hon. AILEEN MacDONALD (10:04:05):

I move:

(1)That this House affirms its support for International Day of the Girl Child.

(2)That this House notes that:

(a)11 October is an international day of observance declared by the United Nations; and

(b)UNICEF has given a call to action from October 2023 through to October 2024, and has called on all global stakeholders to invest in girls.

(3)That this House further notes that:

(a)the first International Day of the Girl Child or Day of Girls was declared on 11 October 2012;

(b)the day increases awareness of issues faced by girls around the world including but not limited to:

(i)access to education;

(ii)child marriage;

(iii)gender-based violence;

(iv)sexual and reproductive rights and more; and

(c)each year there is a theme for the day, which in the past has included:

(i)"Ending Child Marriage"

(ii)"Innovating for Girls' Education"; and

(iii)"My voice, our equal future", and so on.

(4)That this House calls on the Government to highlight girls' achievements, promote empowerment and "Invest in Girls' Rights: Our Leadership, Our Well-being".
