Dementia Action Week

The Hon. AILEEN MacDONALD (10:02:24):

I move:

(1)That this House affirms its support for Dementia Action Week, with the theme of "Act now for a dementia-friendly future".

(2)That this House notes that:

(a)Dementia Action Week is from Monday 18 September 2023 through to Sunday 24 September 2023;

(b)World Alzheimer's Day is on Thursday 21 September 2023; and

(c)the focus of the week is to reduce stigma and discrimination experienced by people living with dementia and their carers.

(3)That this House notes that:

(a)the Dementia Australia Research Foundation is the research arm of Dementia Australia;

(b)the annual Dementia Grants Program provides funding to support innovative research to:

(i)better understand the causes of dementia;

(ii)develop strategies to reduce dementia risk and slow the progression of the disease;

(iii)provide accurate and timely diagnoses;

(iv)improve treatment and care options for people living with dementia; and

(v)find a cure.

(c)during Dementia Action Week, the Dementia Australia Research Foundation encourages us to reach out within our communities and act by learning about the needs of people living with dementia so that there is:

(i)less fear and a greater understanding of dementia;

(ii)less stigma and discrimination associated with dementia; and

(iii)more support and better systems for people living with dementia to live well in their community for longer.

(4)That this House calls on the Government to support Dementia Action Week.
