The Hon Aileen MacDonald OAM MLC today paid tribute to the July opening of the Captain Cook Memorial and Lighthouse at Point Danger on the NSW/Queensland border.
Ms MacDonald recognised the iconic lighthouse as a significant landmark for the Tweed Shire Council.
“I am delighted that the $6.5 million upgrade has positioned the lighthouse as a beaconto serve mariners for decades to come,” Ms MacDonald said today.
“This site has significant cultural heritage for Indigenous Australians with artwork illustrating its significance imbedded in the stonework of the lighthouse a part of the upgrade,” she said.
“I congratulate the Tweed Shire Council on its role in the completion of the upgrade which not only accommodates Marine Rescue NSW Operations Centre at Point Danger, but also serves as a café, gallery and toilet facilities.
”Ms MacDonald said it was a credit to cooperation in the region that the facility was first opened as a joint venture between the Tweed Shire council and the City of Gold Coast.
“Let’s not forget the Point Danger facility logged 27,763 crossings of the Tweed River bar and understood 176 rescues saving 318 people on the water over the past 12 months,” she said.
